Yes it is free, and the all ps3s but the 20gb have a wireless roter, i own a ps3, all you need to do is regester, the only thing you need to pay for is downloadable games.
Just go to settings and connect to a wireless connection. You have to have a router too get wireless internet. Or just put the ethernet cable to the back of the ps3. The ethernet cable is the cable that connects your modem to your pc or router to get internet. And yes its free to play.
